When I was a manager at a large costume company Read Across America became a huge event for us as we sold Cat In the Hat mdse to celebrate the event.
I recall fondly having teachers read aloud regularly to us (Charlotte's Web -- Yes!) and I used to read to my daughters when they were growing up almost every night.
